Pinto Horse Registration Information

The Canadian Pinto Horse Association will issue registrations to any pinto-colored horse with a registered sire and a registered dam, upon passing a personal inspection. The sire and dam do not have to be registered Canadian Pinto horses, but may be registered with any light horse breed excluding Appaloosas and Curly Bashkirs.

To be eligible for registration as a Canadian Pinto, the horse must meet the color requirement established by the Canadian Pinto Horse Association. The coat of the horse in question must be composed of two colors, one being white, and in one of two color patterns: Tobiano or Overo. Tobiano, the most common color pattern, has white as the base, with color imposed on the white. Overo horses have any color other than white as the base, with white being imposed on top, often in a ragged, splashy manner. The accepted colors for Canadian Pintos are white and one of the following colors: bay, black, brown, chestnut, sorrel, dun, red or blue roan, gray, palomino, buckskin, and grulla. Glass or wall eyes are acceptable for registration. The white must cover a minimum of 50 square inches, above the knee and behind the eyes. Facial markings, white socks or stockings and any other markings considered typical of a solid-colored horse, are not considered Pinto markings.

The horse to be registered must also meet the height requirement of 14.1 hands at maturity. Measurement of all horses is to be without shoes or with the height of the shoes subtracted from the measurement. A maximum of four (4) inches of toe from the coronet band will be allowed for the height measurement.

To be eligible for registration in the Canadian Pinto Horse registry all stallions and mares must pass a personal inspection at 2 years of age. A temporary registration certificate will be issued for weanlings and yearlings until such time as the stallion or mare passes the personal inspection. An expiry date is placed on the temporary registration certificates. Geldings will be picture inspected and if in doubt a personal inspection will be ordered.

Acceptable proof of parentage must accompany the registration application. This could be a copy of the registration papers of the horse in question from another breed association, showing names and registration numbers of the sire and dam. If the horse in question does not have papers from another breed association, a copy of the papers of the sire and dam, together with a signed breeder’s certificate must be submitted. Other circumstances regarding parentage may be brought before the board by applicants. The only light horse breeds not accepted by the Canadian Pinto Horse Association are the Appaloosa and Curly Bashkirs.

Photographs of the horse to be registered must also be enclosed. The Canadian Pinto Horse Association requires six photographs: 2 of each side, 1 of the rear and 1 of the front of the horse. Photos are not to exceed 3” by 3” and must not contain people or other horses. Polaroid and laser pictures are not acceptable. Color pictures are preferable, but black and white photos are acceptable. Pictures will be kept permanently on file with the registration application. Two pictures, one of each side, will be attached to the Registration Certificate. Photos should be taken at a great enough distance to ensure full horse is shown in photo, including ears and all 4 hooves.

Registration fees are as follows for members of the Canadian Pinto Horse Association: weanlings and yearlings are issued a temporary registration at a cost of $20 and $30. Two year olds are eligible for permanent registrations at a cost of $50. Weanlings and yearlings must be upgraded from temporary to permanent status at two years of age, following personal inspection, at a cost of $10. Horses three years of age and older are issued permanent papers at a cost of $100. However, the Canadian Pinto Horse Association has decided to REDUCE this fee to $50 until December 31, 2004. All horses 2 years and older are eligible for permanent registration, following a personal inspection, for a fee of $50 – until the end of 2002.

Canadian Pinto Pony Registration Information

The Canadian Pinto Horse Association has re-opened the Canadian Pinto Pony Registry and will issue registrations to any pinto-colored pony, upon passing a personal inspection. The pony in question does not need to have registered parents to be registered as a Canadian Pinto Pony. The association has decided that in order to establish a solid Pinto Pony base, the Pinto Pony registry will waive the requirement for registered parents.

To be eligible for registry as a Canadian Pinto Pony, the pony in question must meet a height requirement of being under 14.1 hands but above 38 inches at maturity. Miniature horses will not be eligible for pony papers. Measurement of all ponies is to be without shoes or with the height of the shoes subtracted from the measurement. A maximum of four (4) inches of toe from the coronet band will be allowed for the height measurement.

To be eligible for registration as a Canadian Pinto Pony, the pony must meet the color requirement established by the Canadian Pinto Horse Association. Facial markings, white socks or stockings and any other markings considered typical of a solid-colored pony, are not considered Pinto markings. Furthermore, the white areas must be visible when the inspector is in a standing position.

Proof of parentage is not required at this time for registration in the Canadian Pinto Pony Registry. However, if pedigree information is available, it should be included on the registration application and it will appear on the registration papers.
